Quite often ACO headquarters at SHAPE gets questions about the force generation process for NATO’s missions so we thought we’d give you some background on that process. Here goes…
In order to carry out its military missions, NATO requires the commitment of troops and equipment by the nations, defined as capabilities. The process of defining and communicating requirements, advising potential contributing nations, obtaining their formal commitments, and having the nations prepare those forces and deploy them to NATO’s missions is called Force Generation and, in the case of a new operation, also includes Force Activation.

Following a three-day visit to Afghanistan, General John Craddock says he continues to see progress in ISAF operations and the development of the Afghan National Army.
“The fact of the matter is that in less than 24 hours notice the Afghan National Army moved a battalion of soldiers to Kandahar, by using both their own airplanes and ISAF aircraft, from a cold start,” said the general in a news release. “There are not too many nations in the world capable of such a response.”
While in theatre General Craddock got an operations update, visited with troops at Bagram Airfield; went to the Hungarian Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Pol-e Khumri and capped his visit by meeting with General Abdul Rahim Wardak, Afghanistan’s Minister of Defense.

In March we told you about the effort to re-build an Afghan National Army Air Corps. Well, in just a few short months it’s been integrated into ISAF’s Intra-Theatre Air Support System. And on June 14, the Army Air Corps delivered its first passengers.
“These missions represent a significant milestone in which the ANAAC is helping ISAF conduct missions in support of rebuilding their nation, achieving another step towards self-sufficiency,” said U.S. Air Force pilot Christopher Lyons, a mentor to the fixed-wing squadron commander.
Re-establishing an effective Army Air Corps is a national priority for the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
